Completely reimagined by the architects at Loader Monteith, this modernist apartment within the Haddo House Estate has been thoughtfully transformed to unlock light, flow and a far more generous sense of space.

Originally designed in the late 1960s by Camden Council architect Robert Bailey, the apartment sits within a quietly celebrated modernist estate in North London. Working with the bones of the building rather than against them, the architects have reshaped the internal plan with a series of intelligent interventions that dramatically improve how the home is used day to day.

At the centre of the redesign is the kitchen, now positioned as a sociable heart of the home. By removing a band of storage that once divided the plan, a newly open kitchen unfolds into a light-filled dining and living space beyond. Stainless steel worktops, custom joinery and cleverly adapted cabinetry create a practical yet understated workspace, while a dining bench provides both seating and hidden storage. The result is a kitchen designed as much for gathering as it is for cooking, perfectly suited to hosting friends.

The reception room sits seamlessly alongside, forming part of the apartment’s new circular flow. Large windows frame views towards the greenery outside, while bespoke oak shelving provides a warm backdrop for books, ceramics and artwork. Natural materials and calm, considered detailing lend the space a quiet softness that complements the building’s modernist origins.

Beyond the living area, the bedroom has been reconfigured as a calm and private retreat. Floor-to-ceiling linen curtains conceal a walk-through wardrobe, softening the transition into the sleeping area and creating a calming atmosphere. A built-in headboard integrates additional storage, while the newly rationalised layout allows the room to feel both spacious and serene.

Entry to the apartment has also been carefully reconsidered. The previously congested hallway once crowded with doors and cupboards has been opened up, with architrave-less pocket doors leading discreetly to the bathroom and bedroom. Reworking this part of the plan, space was carved out for a dedicated work practical nook.

Outside, the apartment enjoys direct access to a private garden, extending the living space outdoors and drawing natural light deep into the plan throughout the day. Together with the open internal layout, it creates a rare sense of connection between inside and out.
