Archmongers specialises in residential retrofit, mid-century houses, tailored commercial spaces, and new-build homes. Projects range in scale, but each one solves its clients’ needs by focusing on the context of each space and the people who occupy it.
The studio is material-driven, designing with a commitment to material truth and integrity. The durability of concept and materials demonstrates Archmongers’ approach to sustainability and placemaking. These values have underpinned the practice’s work on many of London’s landmark modernist buildings, sensitive sites, and listed properties.
Archmongers’ numerous award-winning projects have been widely published and exhibited in the UK and internationally. Elemental House in Hackney won the overall award in Don’t Move, Improve! Awards in 2025. Little Brownings in London’s Dulwich Estate won the overall award in Don’t Move, Improve! Awards in 2022 and is one of a series of celebrated modernist refurbishments in London, which also includes Stego (2019) and Clock House (2015). Commercial projects include retail space Captured by on Columbia Road (2016), the fit-out of Eastern Biological, London’s first independent natural history gift shop (2017), and offices for digital branding company Bakken & Baeck (2021).
Recent projects include the refurbishment of four mid-century homes on the Dulwich Estate, a Grade II listed maisonette in the Trellick Tower; and the renovation of several Victorian houses in Hackney, east London. The practice is currently working on a new-build coastal house in Broadstairs, Kent.
Johan Hybschmann combines practice with teaching; he currently teaches at The Bartlett.
